Eligbility
Anyone can become an official member of the Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union!
Becoming an official member grants you membership rights under the Union’s Constitution, and you must become a full member in order to have voting rights at General Meetings.
AUWU membership is free, and we have no application or other membership fees. We may seek to clarify your eligibility criteria from time to time.
We do encourage solidarity members in full-time work, or who are otherwise financially independent, to contribute financially.
To ensure that the Union is a safe place for all, all membership applicants must:
Read the Union’s Constitution (Rules of Association) [PDF, 336 KB] [RTF, 415 KB], and support our Purposes of Association and agree to comply with our Rules.
Read, and agree to comply with, the Union’s Safe Organisation Policies and Procedures [PDF, 301 KB] [RTF, 742 KB].
To ensure the integrity of the Union as being run by the unemployed and for the unemployed, to become a full (voting) member you must:
Be unemployed, underemployed or unwaged, or otherwise be a recipient of an income support payment.
Be endorsed for membership by two other voting members of the Union and state the names of these members in the application.
If you do not meet the criteria to become a voting member (e.g. you do not yet know two members who would endorse you for this category), you are still likely to be granted associate membership as long as you agree to our purposes, rules and procedures. We welcome our comrades in full-time employment as solidarity members in this category. Please note that after you apply for membership, all current members within a 50 kilometre radius of your nominated postcode will be notified of your intention to join. All membership applications are subject to a 30 day objections period per the Union’s Rules of Association.
